Course Overview
Description
This one-year full-time course combines academic and practical learning to enable you to acquire the essential knowledge, skills and competence to work in any healthcare setting as a HCA and to progress successfully to higher education to any branch of nursing.
Emphasis on work experience in clinical settings will help you decide on the direction you wish to take in your nursing career, and you will be supported by our qualified registered nursing teachers and careers counsellors.
On this course you will explore how a healthy child develops towards adulthood traversing the challenges of childhood illnesses and accidents.

It is desirable that students should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All students are required to complete an assessment before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths (if applicable) to complete a Level 5 course.
On completion the student can obtain a place in B. Sc Nursing Degree in the CAO or in the UK system in UCAS to become a qualified nurse.
