Course Overview
Description
This course aims to provide the student with the necessary knowledge and experience to continue on to a nursing career at third level. It will provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge to enable them to work as a Healthcare Assistant in hospitals and in nursing homes.
As part of the course students will complete 3 weeks work experience placement in a nursing home or hospital.
Students will be given the opportunity to complete the following short courses during the academic year:

It is desirable that students should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All students are required to complete an assessment before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths (if applicable) to complete a Level 5 course.
On completion the student can obtain a place in B. Sc Nursing Degree in the CAO or in the UK system in UCAS to become a qualified nurse.
