A new route to a degree in Information Technology available in Portlaoise

Complete the first year of a four-year degree in Portlaoise Institute – then complete the remainder of your degree in SETU’s Carlow Campus!

South East Technological University (SETU) and Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) are participating in an Unified Tertiary Project to co-deliver a degree programme in Portlaoise. This programme will give people of Portlaoise and surrounding areas the opportunity to access a third level course in their local area without any requirement for a CAO application.

This course provides a unique blend of business and IT subjects which is viewed by industry as an essential element in the role of a modern IT manager. The course comprises a significant amount of practical work. In particular, Year 1 features continuous assessments with no final year exam, enabling students to monitor progress throughout the year.

On completion of the course, students will
have a detailed understanding of:

  • Network systems management, advanced database management
  • Strategic management
  • Team work and people management skills
  • Financial information management
  • Day-to-day IT department management

In this four-year course, you will complete the first year in Portlaoise Institute, followed by Years 2, 3 and 4 in SETU’s Carlow Campus.

Students will be registered with SETU from Year 1 and will have access to the full range of services available to all SETU students. Transport from Portlaoise to Carlow will be provided in Year 1 for cross-campus workshops. In this four-year course, you will complete the first two years in Portlaoise Institute, followed by Years 3 and 4 in SETU’s Carlow campus. Students will be registered with SETU from Year 1 and will have access to the full range of services available to all SETU students. Transport from Portlaoise to Carlow will be provided in Years 1 and 2 for cross-campus workshops.
