A new route to a degree in Software Development!
Complete the first year of a four-year degree in Portlaoise Institute – then complete the remainder of your degree in SETU’s Carlow Campus!
South East Technological University (SETU) and Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board (LOETB) are participating in an Unified Tertiary Project to co-deliver a degree programme in Portlaoise. This programme will give people of Portlaoise and surrounding areas the opportunity to access a third level course in their local area without any requirement for a CAO application.
Our Honours Business Degree programme will equip you with a broad software developmnet skill-base, providing you with a wide range of career options so you can progress to work in a variety of software developmnet environments. The first year of the programme will provide will provide you with a foundation in software development, allowing you time, and access to expert guidance advice, to explore future career choices open to you in the different specialism streams.
In this four-year course, you will complete the first year in Portlaoise Institute, followed by Years 2, 3 and 4 in SETU’s Carlow campus Students will be registered with SETU from Year 1 and will have access to the full range of services available to all SETU students. Transport from Portlaoise to Carlow will be provided in Years 1 and 2 for cross-campus workshops.

Those wishing to be accepted onto the programme should meet the following minimum entry criteria:
- l Leaving Certificate; 2H5 & 4O6/H7; including English or Irish O6/H7; Mathematics O6/H7, or l
- Level 5 major award,
- or l Other qualifications equivalent to a major
award at level 5 on the NFQ
However, we will also accept your application if you are aged 21 or over but do not meet the minimum entry requirement. Your application will be assessed based on merit, taking into account your life experience, work or community experience.
If your first language is not English, the standard required is B2 (or equivalent) on the TERTIARY PROGRAMMES PORTLAOISE INSTITUTE Page 10 | LOETB Portlaoise Institute Prospectus 2022-2023 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in writing, reading, listening and speaking. Evidence of achievement of this standard is necessary for entry to the programme.
LOETB and SETU’s Unified Tertiary Programmes aim to encourage the participation and success of students from sections of society that are underrepresented in higher education, by offering degree programmes at a local level. In the event of over subscription to the programme, priority will be given to applicants who most demonstrate local need.
There are no registration fees for the first year of the programme, which will be delivered in Portlaoise Institute. Students may be eligible to apply to SUSI for a grant to cover fees for Years 2, 3 and 4.
