- Certification: QQI Level 5 Certificate in Software Development
- Duration: One Year, September to May
The overall aim of this one-year programme is to introduce the student to the areas of software, database and web development. It is aimed at students of Leaving Certificate standard and leads to a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Software Development.

It is desirable that students should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All students are required to complete an assessment before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths (if applicable) to complete a Level 5 course.

The ICT sector is booming at the moment. As a result there is a shortage of Computer Science graduates in Ireland. This course serves as an excellent springboard to a qualification and a career in the IT sector.
