This is a one year full time pre-university science course. The course will allow the student to learn and practice some of the key scientific skills needed at third level. The course will give students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and confidence in a range of science subjects including biology, anatomy, chemistry and material science.
The mathematics element allows students to bring their mathematics levels up to the competence relevant to their intended third level course. As well as developing a grounding in science, students will also develop team work and effective communication skills on this course.

It is desirable that students should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All students are required to complete an assessment before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths (if applicable) to complete a Level 5 course.
