This one year course leading to a QQI Level 5 Certificate in Security Studies is designed to prepare students for employment in the highly specialised security industry. It introduces the learner to a range of personal and professional qualities required of a security person, an understanding of the relevant legislation, regulations and standards in the Irish private security industry and the skills necessary to obtain employment in the industry.
The Security Studies award is a valuable addition to those who are preparing to join An Garda Siochana, the Defence Forces or the Prison Service. It will also benefit those seeking to set up their own security business.

It is desirable that students should be of Leaving Certificate Standard or have achieved an Applied Leaving Certificate with Distinction. Portlaoise Institute welcomes applications from mature students. Mature students are assessed on their merits and do not require the above qualifications.
All students are required to complete an assessment before commencing a Further Education course in Portlaoise Institute. This assessment confirms if the student has the required level of English and Maths (if applicable) to complete a Level 5 course.
- Career Opportunities
Previous students have achieved direct employment in static guarding, mobile security patrols, retail security and security for special events. Also students have gained entry into the Defence Forces and the Irish Navy. This course gives the learner a valuable insight on how to set up your own security company.
Students who successfully complete this course may gain entry to the Garda Siochana, Prison Service, Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme. Students who complete this award are eligible to apply for membership of the Private Security Authority of Ireland (PSA).
